Newsletter # 1 ( January)

2004 Road Cycling Nationals – Hokitika 21st to 24th October

Welcome to the first newsletter of the 2004 Road Cycling Nationals, to be held on the West Coast of the South Island  - in the town of Hokitika.  A website will be up and running by February which will include updates and details as we get closer to the event.

General

The Race HQ will be in the Wests Club Rooms in Hokitika beside Cass Square ( home of the famous Wild Food Festival).  Wests is only 500 meters from the start/ finish line of both the Road race and the Time Trial courses and a similar distance from the town centre

Courses.

The course for the road race is known as the Blue Spur – a 25km circuit starting and finishing at Westland High School.  This course is interesting with a few testing hills.  The Time Trial Course will be Kokatahi Road – starting and finishing once again near the base at Wests Club Rooms, and is a flat out and back course through some prime dairy farming country. Course maps and profiles will be posted on the website and also included in the next newsletter.

Accommodation

Labour weekend 2004 will be very busy in Hokitika as several reunions are scheduled.  Of the 600 commercial beds available – many are already booked so you would be well advised to book now to ensure suitable accommodation for the event. Accommodation has been tentatively booked at all the local motels and Holiday Parks for cyclists attending the Nationals until February 16th .  After this date the Moteliers will no longer hold these  beds for us.   The Information Centre Westland is coordinating bookings  - contact details are phone (03) 755 6166,  fax  (03)  755 5011,  or e mail  hkkvin@xtra.co.nz .  If you choose to contact accommodation providers directly please ensure that you quote the following number  2124 – to assist the Moteliers to identify that you are confirming one of the tentatively booked beds for cyclists attending the nationals.

The West Coast is well known for its spectacular scenery and hospitality  - so make sure you include some time to experience the Coast.
